Huawei introduces MateBook Fold and MateBook Pro with its own HarmonyOS

Huawei’s push for technological independence

Huawei has officially launched its first laptops powered by HarmonyOS, a self-developed operating system. The introduction of the MateBook Fold and MateBook Pro represents a major step in the company’s strategy to reduce reliance on Western technologies, particularly after U.S. sanctions.

The MateBook Fold is an innovative laptop featuring an 18-inch OLED dual-screen, which can be fully extended, eliminating the need for a physical keyboard. Meanwhile, the MateBook Pro follows a more traditional design, featuring a physical keyboard and conventional display.

What is HarmonyOS?

HarmonyOS was developed by Huawei as an alternative to Windows and macOS, allowing greater control over its hardware and software ecosystem. The company began working on the system in 2015, launching the first version for smartphones in 2020. Now, HarmonyOS is making its way to computers, promising a seamless and integrated experience.

The operating system already supports over 150 applications, including WPS Office, an alternative to Microsoft Office, and a photo editor from Meitu. Huawei claims that by the end of 2024, more than 7.2 million developers will be creating apps for HarmonyOS, which is already installed on over 1 billion devices, including smartphones and TVs.

Challenges and expectations

Despite the advancements, Huawei faces significant challenges in popularizing HarmonyOS in the computer market. The company has not disclosed which chip powers the new laptops but indicated that the high prices reflect the cost of new chipset manufacturing technology.

The base model of the MateBook Fold will be sold for 23,999 yuan (approximately $3,328), while the MateBook Pro will start at 7,999 yuan. Huawei is betting on HarmonyOS’s full integration with its ecosystem to attract consumers looking for an alternative to Windows.

Conclusion

The launch of Huawei’s first laptops with HarmonyOS marks a significant milestone in its strategy to become independent of Western technologies. With support for a growing number of applications and advanced functionalities, the company aims to establish its operating system as a viable alternative in the global computer market.
